Abstract

From A to Z, Everything Is Miscellaneous will completely reshape the way you think - and what you know - about the world. Includes information on alphabetical order, Amaxon.com, animals, Aristotle, authority, Bettmann Archive, blogs (weblogs), books, broadcasting, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), business, card catalog, categories and categorization, clusters, companies, Colon Classification, conversation, Melvil Dewey, Dewey Decimal Classification system, Encyclopaedia Britannica, encyclopedia, essentialism, experts, faceted classification system, first order of order, Flickr.com, Google, Great Books of the Western World, ancient Greeks, health and medical information, identifiers, index, inventory tracking, knowledge, labels, leaf and leaves, libraries, Library of Congress, links, Carolus Linnaeus, lumping and splitting, maps and mapping, marketing, meaning, metadata, multiple listing services (MLS), names of people, neutrality or neutral point of view, New York Public Library, Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), order and organization, people, physical space, everything having place, Plato, race, S.R. Ranganathan, Eleanor Rosch, Joshua Schacter, science, second order of order, simplicity, social constructivism, social knowledge, social networks, sorting, species, standardization, tags, taxonomies, third order of roder, topical categorization, tree, Uniform Product Code (UPC), users, Jimmy Wales, web, Wikipedia, etc. Philosopher Weinberger shows how the digital revolution is radically changing the way we make sense of our lives. Human beings constantly collect, label, and organize data--but today, the shift from the physical to the digital is mixing, burning, and ripping our lives apart. In the past, everything had its one place--the physical world demanded it--but now everything has its places: multiple categories, multiple shelves. Everything is suddenly miscellaneous. Weinberger charts the new principles of digital order that are remaking business, education, politics, science, and culture. He examines how Rand McNally decides what information not to include in a physical map (and why Google Earth is winning that battle), how Staples stores emulate online shopping to increase sales, why your children's teachers will stop having them memorize facts, and how the shift to digital music stands as the model for the future.--From publisher description.

Abstract

The principal findings of experimental economics are that impersonal exchange in markets converges in repeated interaction to the equilibrium states implied by economic theory, under information conditions far weaker than specified in the theory. In personal, social, and economic exchange, as studied in two-person games, cooperation exceeds the prediction of traditional game theory. This book relates these two findings to field studies and applications and integrates them with the main themes of the Scottish Enlightenment and with the thoughts of F. A. Hayek: through emergent socio-economic institutions and cultural norms, people achieve ends that are unintended and poorly understood. In cultural changes, the role of constructivism, or reason, is to provide variation, and the role of ecological processes is to select the norms and institutions that serve the fitness needs of societies.

Abstract

Taxonomies are often thought to play a niche role within content-oriented knowledge management projects. They are thought to be 'nice to have' but not essential. In this ground-breaking book, Patrick Lambe shows how they play an integral role in helping organizations coordinate and communicate effectively. Through a series of case studies, he demonstrates the range of ways in which taxonomies can help organizations to leverage and articulate their knowledge. A step-by-step guide in the book to running a taxonomy project is full of practical advice for knowledge managers and business owners ali

Abstract

We are pleased to present to you the proceedings of the sixth Annual Inter- tionalWorkingConferenceonActiveNetworks,whichtookplaceinOctober2004 atThe InformationandTelecommunicationsTechnologyCenter,The University of Kansas, USA. The proceedings of IWAN 2004 mark a transition between the fundedactivenetworkingprogramsinEurope,Japan, andthe UnitedStates and a strong, continued interest in the architectures of programmable networks. Thetechnicalcommitteeaccepted14papersforpresentationfrom32subm- tedpapers.Thepapersareorganizedintosectionsonactivenetworksystemsand architectures, security in active networking, active network applications, mobile active networks and active network management. Whereas the contributions on active network architectures and management build upon mature concepts - visedinthepreviousyearsandareincrementalfollow-upsoftherelatedresearch, the security considerations are of primary importance to the active networks practitioners. The papers on mobile applications of active networks, like TCP gatewaysbetweenwirelessandwirelinenetworks, provideadditionalinspirations to the active network researchers. Featured in the program were a keynote address by Jonathan M. Smith of DARPA and two invited papers, one by Takashi Egawa, Yoshiaki Kiriha, and Akira Arutaki on Tackling the Complexity of Future Networks , and one by Bernhard Plattner and James Sterbenz, titled ProgrammableNetworks: Alt- native Mechanisms and Design Choices . Based on the reviewer feedback, the authors of the paper Dynamic Link Measurements Using Active Components , Dimitrios Pezaros,Manolis Sifalakis, Stefan Schmid and David Hutchison, all of Lancaster University, were awarded this year's Best Paper Award. During the two days of the conference there were several lively discussions, including one at theendofthe?rstdayonthescopeandfutureofIWANitself.Thesocialevent, barbecue at the Circle-S ranch, provided a most enjoyable venue for discussion and collegiality.

Abstract

Managing in the Information Economy: Current Research Issues presents the recent research directions that address the issue of management in this economy. The contributors include leading researchers with interests in a diverse set of topics. While the volume cannot give a complete and comprehensive picture, it can provide introductions to important areas, and point to some important topics for future research. Therefore the book begins with perspectives at the level of the economy as a whole and then progressively addresses industrial structure, sectors, functions (e-commerce) and business practices. Introductions to the main sections and the papers in each section are provided. The volume is organized around six sections: The Information Economy; Structure and the Organization of the Information Economy; Marketing and Ecommerce; Emerging Issues in the Information Economy; Operations in the Information Economy; and Empirical Studies of Business Practices. Please see the Table of Contents and Editor's Introduction for further details.

Abstract

Abstract

"The overall goal of the EURASIP Journal on Information Security, sponsored by the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP), is to bring together researchers and practitioners dealing with the general field of information security, with a particular emphasis on the use of signal processing tools to enable the security of digital contents. As such, it addresses any work whereby security primitives and multimedia signal processing are used together to ensure the secure access to the data. Enabling technologies include watermarking, data hiding, steganography and steganalysis, joint signal processing and encryption, perceptual hashing, identification, biometrics, fingerprinting, and digital forensics." -- Publisher's website.
